BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Several homes caught on fire in the Ensley community early Friday morning.
Firefighters were called out to homes on Woodland and Prince Avenues starting around 2:30 a.m. Both structures were said to be vacant at the time.
Then around 4 a.m., crews responded to a two-alarm fire on 42nd Street in Ensley. That home is a total loss.
Residents in a neighboring home were also displaced after flames spread to that structure.
All of these incidents, happening around the same time, left fire crews stretched thin.
"The companies that are here are from areas like UAB, downtown. Most of them are not from the immediate area. We have been very extended," said Battalion Chief Raymond Williams while working the 42nd Street fire.
