JEMISON, AL (WBRC) - A soldier returning home from Afghanistan surprised his youngest daughter by showing up at her school on Friday.

Master Sergeant John Richards is home on leave for two weeks for Thanksgiving. He and his wife Judy kept his homecoming a secret from their youngest daughter Taylor so he could surprise her at a school assembly.

As part of the surprise, Chilton Christian Academy in Jemison held a pep rally on Friday to announce the winner of their annual food drive.

Before announcing the winner, church pastor Donald Jones spoke to the students about Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and being thankful for those serving in the military.

Taylor started to get teary-eyed, then the pastor introduced her dad as he walked out. She ran to him, crying, and gave him a big hug.

Richards' wife, three other daughters and two grandchildren also came to the assembly. The other sisters knew he would be home and worked hard not to give away the surprise for Taylor.

The school shared a photo of the Richards family on their website with an announcement about the sweet surprise.
