Birmingham residents gather seeking unity, respect following divisive election
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Believe it or not, we're a week out from the election.
But your Facebook feed is likely still full of strong emotions and not much unity. Even so, Tuesday night in Birmingham, people came together to talk about how to bridge the gap this campaign season created.
Organizers said the discussion can be summed up in one word: respect. That's what they hope students took away.
People from different backgrounds and beliefs packed the meeting to have a discussion on civil discourse.
The Panel was made up of Jefferson County's District Attorney Brandon Falls, UAB faculty and members of the faith community.
The panel felt having it in heart of Birmingham couldn't have been a better place because of the city's civil rights past.
The leader of the Birmingham Islamic Society says the best way to understand each other is to talk it out.
"Those who may not have agreed with Trump should stand firmly against those people who have made those kinds of comments. But at the same time, the other side has to stand. We need to talk. The pulpits have become the source of division, be it a mosque, be it synagogue churches," Ashaq Taufique said.
The event was put together Monday and st6ill managed to draw a large crowd in spite of the short notice.
