BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Smith Lake is the deepest lake in Alabama and one of the deepest in the Southeastern United States. The current drought has created several problems at this location.

"When the water is this low, there are few places you can launch a boat that has a cement ramp this deep into the water," Trident Marina owner Jeff Tolbert said.

Currently, Smith Lake is about 14 feet below full pool. That creates problems for a steep shoreline that has lowered beyond most of the boat launches surrounding the boating hot spot of Big Bridge.

"A lot of people who waited too late to get their boats out of the water for the winter, they can't get their boat out now," Tolbert said. "It requires going to the dock and winterizing the boat on the dock instead of having it stored in your garage or a dry dock."
