Navy veteran gets the keys to her new Habitat for Humanity home
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Navy veteran's dream came true this Veterans Day.
"Overwhelming. It's great. I don't think I have smiled this much," Toni Byrd said.
On Friday, Habitat for Humanity and UAB employees presented the keys to Byrd's new home in Pratt City.
Bryd said without the program she could not afford a home.
"It would be impossible. Even with the loan the military gives you there is still so much more that you need besides that. Without Habitat for Humanity I would not have a house," Byrd said.
Employees at UAB help build the home. The employees decided they wanted to do something for a veteran this year as a part of the Benevolent Fund.
"UAB employees really want o make a difference with our veterans. We want to make sure we supporting our veterans. all the sacrifices they have made for us," Lisa Higginbotham with the UAB Benevolent Fund program said.
Byrd is grateful today and proud to have served her country.
"I'm grateful being a veteran. Being a part of this country, everything that is involved in it," Byrd said.
