EUTAW, AL (WBRC) - The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is assisting in the investigation of a 37-year-old man shot and killed on Thursday night in Eutaw.

The victim has been identified as Stanley Bridgmon, according to Eutaw Police Chief Derick Coleman.

Coleman said witnesses told police Bridgmon accidentally shot himself.

However, Coleman says that is still under investigation and an autopsy will be performed on Bridgmon.

Coleman says a call of shots fired came in before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3. When police and paramedics responded to Wilson Street, Bridgmon was pronounced dead on the scene.

Coleman says he has called for the assistance of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency due to a shortage of officers in the Eutaw Police Department.

Three officers were recently placed on paid administrative by the city's outgoing mayor.

Coleman did not indicate any connection between the two incidents, but he said the location where Bridgmon was found dead was recently the scene of a house fire.

"We had a fire at this particular residence a couple of days ago, so this house was burned down," Coleman said.

"When officers arrived on the scene, they said it was about 10 to 15 people here on the scene," Coleman said of what officers discovered Thursday night.

Coleman said police questioned the individuals on the scene.
