BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Almost 200 AT&T employees will have to find new jobs after the company announced layoffs in the Birmingham area.
Union President Steve Monk says he is disappointed with the decision to cut the 190 technician positions.
He issued a statement saying, "CWA is focused on making sure our members receive all the benefits they are entitled to under the contract."
CWA has also reached out to the State of Alabama Department of Commerce Rapid Response Team for any assistance the office can offer.
"We are consolidating some work currently done in one of our facilities in Birmingham into another company facility in Atlanta," AT&T Spokesman Lance Skelly said. "Affected employees will have the opportunity to work in that location - and relocation assistance will be provided."
If employees are not able to move, Skelly says AT&T will work to help as many as possible find another position with the company.
"There are 60 positions available across the state," he said.
Monk said the employees test complex circuits used by business customers. He said their last day will be Christmas Eve.
