JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Eighty gallons of diesel Fuel spilled out after a tractor trailer left the road, slamming into a tree. on I-459 South in the middle of rush hour traffic

The driver of the 18 wheeler is going to be okay.

The truck tore through a guard rail and went about 200 yards off the road into a ravine and slammed into a tree.

Investigators say the tree is what saved the driver from serious injuries.

The fuel leak worried emergency workers because this happened so close to the Cahaba River.

"There's always a concern anytime there's diesel fuel gets into a waterway, but we are far away up from the Cahaba River that this all went into the ground. Down at the truck, the diesel truck has been plugged by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Hazmat," said Jefferson County EMA Officer Bob Ammons.
