Man formally charged in Fultondale chase, manhunt

FULTONDALE, AL (WBRC) - The man who led authorities in Fultondale on a chase, exchanged gunfire with an officer and led others on a manhunt is now behind bars facing several charges related to the incident.
Alvin Roy Jacobs, a 45-year-old Birmingham resident, is in the Jefferson County Jail charged with two counts of attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary and first-degree robbery with no bond after being captured by authorities late Thursday morning.
Jacobs, who was considered armed and dangerous by authorities, led police on a manhunt when officers received a call around 3 a.m. about a suspicious person possibly breaking into cars early Thursday morning. An officer in the area spotted the suspicious vehicle and chased Jacobs.
Jacobs then crashed his car through the fence of a home in the 2300 block of Ridgebrook Road near the Fultonbrook Estates community. Police said he fired a shot at the officer before running away.
The officer was not injured.
"There was a shot fired immediately after the suspect exited his car. Probably 30 to 45 minutes later this gentleman went into a home here in Fultondale where he was able to rob the people of their car keys, basically a home invasion," Fultondale Police Chief D.P. Smith said.
Jacobs also broke into a home where Catherine Valladares and her three children were inside.
"The dogs were barking and I got up to see what was going on. I turned the light on and saw a man holding a gun," she said.
Valladares and her children were able to safely get out of the house. The suspect got into another gunfight with law enforcement as he was trying to get away.
The man ran into a wooded area nearby and law enforcement officers closed off the area.
A state police helicopter from Cullman joined in the search and eventually was able to help flush the suspect out.
Jacobs was treated at a hospital before being booked into the county jail.
He was previously convicted of crimes dating back to 1987, including Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Promoting Prison Contraband, Inmate in Possession of a Cell Phone, Receiving Stolen Property, Criminal Trespassing, Assault, Escape, Burglary.
He was also arrested in 2013 for attempting to smuggle cell phones and drugs into Donaldson Correctional facility while serving time there.
