Person questioned after human remains found in abandoned apartment

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham police are investigating a homicide after finding what appeared to be human remains in an abandoned apartment.
Police said a man called them around 7:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, wanting to file a missing person's report for his girlfriend. They responded to the 1000 block of Sunhill Road to investigate.
While officers were there, a witness was looking for the missing woman and found what appeared to be burned human remains inside one of the abandoned apartments on Sunhill Road.
Officers also saw the remains of a woman who had been severely burned inside the apartment, Lt. Sean Edwards said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives are questioning a person of interest in the case.
The victim's name is expected to be released later on Monday, pending the notification of the next of kin.
