BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Birmingham City Council's budget and finance committee approved funding for the Holocaust memorial downtown in a meeting on Monday night.

The decision follows a heated council meeting last week.

Rebecca Dobrinski with Birmingham's Holocaust Education Center said the proposed memorial is all about teaching kids about history.

"We look forward to the opportunity to provide another outlet for education about the Holocaust and about the consequences of the Holocaust and discrimination because as I've previously said, it's a slippery slope of hate and you don't want anyone to go down that road again," Dobrinski said.

The full council now has to vote on the funding, but City Councilor Sheila Tyson has raised concerns about funding this when Shadow Lawn Cemetery also needs money.

She plans to submit a dollar amount on it in a few weeks.
