JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Sheriff Mike Hale is used to taking on the bad guys.
His family is used to taking on bad diseases like cancer. Now the sheriff is stepping into the ring to take on that battle himself.
"Finding out you have cancer, prostate cancer, is quite a shock to the system," Hale said.
Sheriff Hale said he found out three months ago. He is undergoing radiation treatment five days a week for eight weeks.
"I'm kind of tired. I come back to the office, eat an early lunch, have a nap. I don't think citizens will begrudge me that," Hale said.
Hale has stood at his wife Dianna's side during her battle with breast cancer. She is seven years cancer free.
Now she is an inspiration for his fight.
"I'm blessed to have D on my side. She is battle tested and battled scarred," Hale said.
The sheriff says he considered not talking about the cancer. He says Mike Hale is not important, but the sheriff's office is.
"I want the guys out there who inherently look up to the sheriff to follow his lead and take his advice. I want them to take my advice. Go get your prostate exam and get our PSA and do it," Hale said.
Hale said he is looking forward to winning this battle, ending radiation treatment and football season.
