Mike talked with Melanie Williamson with the Greater Birmingham Association of Homebuilders about the latest options in countertops. She showed us granite, Silestone quartz, and Dekton. She says granite offers different colors and patterns - no two pieces are alike. It can have a polished or matte finish. It is scratch resistant stain resistant if you seal is regularly, about twice a year. If it gets chipped, it can be repaired.
Quartz is the fourth hardest mineral on the planet. Because it is a manmade product, the colors are consistent from one piece to the next. Lighter colors of white, grey, and taupe are the trend these days. It doesn't scratch and you don't have to worry about sealing it. Melanie says it is virtually maintenance free. Dekton is ultra-compact and has zero porosity which means no sealing, no staining, and no scratching. She also says it is strong so you can put it on longer distances with no extra support. It comes in different textures and colors. Melanie says granite and quartz are very similar in price. The Dekton is on the more expensive end of the price range.
