BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Birmingham man says his dog scared away an intruder who kicked in his door around 4 a.m.

This happened in the Crestwood North neighborhood. Scott Burnett credits his dog, Sydney for keeping him safe.

Sydney started barking just before 4 a.m., which woke Burnett up.

Burnett says he heard his security alarm beeping and knew someone was in the house.

Surveillance video shows the intruder walk up to the front porch twice.

Burnett says the invader even took the time to unscrew the porch light and prop open the screen door. He then kicked the door in and tried stealing the television.

Sydney is trained to react to the word "intruder," which is what she did on Tuesday morning.

"I was in the very back of the house and had no other real means to make sure that somebody left other than her. And we have a deal, she gets to go on fabulous boat rides and rides in the convertible, and she guards the house."

Burnett says another person was waiting in a getaway car parked next to his house.

Birmingham police are investigating the case.
