BLOUNT COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - A 35-year-old Birmingham man is facing several charges after authorities say he attempted to check out a teenage girl from her Blount County High School to have sex with her.
Carlton Carvel Bates was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of second-degree rape, two counts of traveling to meet a minor for a sex act, one count of attempted kidnapping and one count of electric solicitation of a minor.
Bates attempted to check out the girl, who is under the age of 16, from J.B. Pennington High School on Monday, Jan. 25, according to a news release from Blount County District Attorney's Pamela Casey's office.
He met the girl on the social media app Kik, according to the Blount County Sheriff's office.
The app allows people to communicate anonymously through instant messages on smartphones.
An investigation also revealed that Bates allegedly met with the girl two weeks ago and had sex with her off-campus.
He believed he was meeting with the girl again through Kik when he was arrested in front of Mugshots in Birmingham's Uptown District.
Casey previously warned parents about the dangers the app posed in a Facebook video.
"I am begging you to take your child's phone and delete the Kik app. There's nothing good that's going to come from it, and it could be very dangerous to your child," she said.
The Birmingham Police Department also assisted in the arrest.
