Birmingham police ID man killed early Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham police have identified a man who was shot to death early Sunday morning.

North Precinct officers responded to a reported shooting in the 1100 block of 15th Street North around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10.

When officers got to the scene, they found 33-year-old Devarus Newby suffering from a gunshot wound. The paramedics tried to save him, but were unsuccessful.

Birmingham police tweeted at 3:22 a.m. that a male victim was shot and had died.

Our crew on the scene saw about 15 shell casings on the ground.

Police said their initial investigation shows there had been some sort of altercation at the scene before the shooting. They have also been told that the location of the shooting was known for illicit activity, but they have not yet confirmed that information.

No word yet on any suspects or persons of interest.
