BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Being a parent, especially a new parent, can be overwhelming and a statewide non-profit group wants to help you.
The Parenting Assistance Line (PAL) is based in Tuscaloosa, but can help you no matter where you live.
"PAL is a free and confidential phone line," said Amy Walker, "It is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you happen to call after hours or on the weekend you can leave a message and we will call you back."
The phone number is 1-866-962-3030.
"Parents, grandparents and caregivers can call and we help them find resources in whatever county they're calling from. It's a statewide number so we get calls from all over the state of Alabama," said Walker, "We get questions about birth, all the way from birth all the way up to adolescents."
Walker says this is a typical call: "You go to the grocery store or Wal-Mart and they have a meltdown in the store and you don't know how to handle it. You've got all these people watching you so you feel the pressure too. So we kind of guide parents through those difficult different stages and we have developmental information about the different things your children will go through as they grow and as they mature and as they develop and it just helps you know you're doing the right thing."
Walker says their most common calls about the teenage years are usually about discipline issues. When it's a call about infant issues, it's usually about sleeping, eating, feeding or potty training.
"We have information in our office that we can put a packet together and we can mail you that information and then you'll have something in your hand that you're able to refer to," said Walker.
