BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A 40-year-old woman was shot to death by her son Sunday at a residence at Alpine Village Apartments on Lorna Road, according to Hoover police.

Hoover police charged Devarta Dedre Thomas with murder on Monday. He is being held at the Hoover City Jail on a $250,000 bond and is expected to be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail later on Monday.

Captain Gregg Rector identified the victim as Tawanda Denise Thomas, of Birmingham.

Hoover police responded to the location after receiving a hang-up 911 call Sunday afternoon. Officers discovered Tawanda Thomas inside an apartment.

Paramedics transported her to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead after arrival.

Investigators believe a family argument escalated and led to the shooting.
