BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - If you recently updated to iOS 9 on your Apple device, changing a setting on your phone could make a difference on your bill.

Wi-Fi Assist was designed to give a better internet experience, but it could come with some costly consequences. When it's activated, your iPhone will use cellular data to supplement the Wi-Fi if the router signal is weak. Though the option will boost your phone speed if you don't have unlimited data, you could easily use up and go over your limit.

"It actually causes people's wi-fi to go off without them knowing it. So data usage goes up tremendously from their plan. They are having overcharges on their bill, running out of data allotment for the month, some have slow internet. It's causing a lot of problems.", said Keyton Hull of Total Cellphone Repair.

So how do you turn "Wi-Fi Assist" off? Go to settings and click on cellular, scroll all the way to the bottom and change toggle from on to off.
