TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - A Brookwood teacher who was arrested in August for allegedly having sex with a student is back in custody after being indicted by a grand jury.

Joe Bradley Petrey was charged with a school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 years by a grand jury Thursday, Sept. 24. This is the second time he has been charged in the case. The first charge was dropped Monday.

Petrey turned himself in before noon.

He was arrested in August for allegedly having sex with a female student who recently graduated after photos surfaced online showing evidence of a relationship dating back to 2014.

Tuscaloosa County Schools superintendent Elizabeth Swinford was anonymously sent a link to a photo album with more than 700 photos and notified the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Prior to his arrest, Petrey was a social studies teacher and a football coach in the system.

Evidence showed the relationship with the student began at the beginning of the 2014 school year, according to a search warrant.

Petrey's resignation from the school system was approved by the school board on Aug. 3.

Tuscaloosa County investigators are expected to address this case at 1:30 p.m. today.
