PELL CITY, AL (WBRC) - A 13-year-old boy died after collapsing in a classroom on Thursday morning in Pell City.

Superintendent Michael Barber said it happened at O.D. Duran Junior High during first period.

St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell said the student, Jalin Puckett, was taken to a nearby hospital and wasn't revived.

The coroner says Puckett had a pre-existing heart condition.

The superintendent called Puckett a "wonderful young man" and "hearts are broken" at the school and in the community.

"You don't lose a child without it affecting the entire community," Barber said.

The school is providing counselors to students and staff. They released the following statement on their website and Facebook page:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of one of our precious students. Out of respect, we are withholding his name at this time. In the words of one of his classmates, "He was never mad at anybody. He was always in a good mood." Another student said, "He was always lifting other people up. When other people would make fun of people who weren't doing good, he would be nice to them. He was really sweet." Our students, faculty, and staff are in mourning and would appreciate your prayers during this time for us and for the friends and family of the child we have lost. We will announce funeral arrangements when they are available.
