Mover, 19, crushed to death by safe in Mountain Brook
MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL (WBRC) - A 19-year-old mover was fatally crushed by a safe he was attempting to move in Mountain Brook on Tuesday, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirms.
The incident happened at a home on Oakdale Road.
Trayshawn Presha was moving a safe with other movers when the ramp they were walking up slipped.
The coroner's office said everyone but Presha was able to get out of the way. He was crushed and died a short time later at UAB Hospital. The coroner's office did not specify what type of safe they were trying to move.
Presha was employed by the Atlas Van moving company. The company issued a statement on his death on Thursday, May 15.
"This is an incredibly tragic accident, and we're deeply saddened to hear that a young man lost his life. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Trayshawn Presha.
The safety and wellbeing of everyone in the Atlas Van Lines family is always a top priority. We'll continue to do what we can to ensure their safety and help prevent these types of accidents in the future," the company said.
"I've never heard of anybody being crushed like this in a move," Scott Planson with Changing Spaces Moving sad.
Planson first heard about the accident on social media.
"To know that someone in our industry was lost in such a tragic way is very hard to understand and to comprehend right now," said Planson.
Planson said he knows it can be dangerous moving home safes.
"We don't like to get safes that are 1,000 pounds or more. They're more popular now, people are getting bigger safes," he said.
And Planson says most moving accidents happen around the ramps.
"With guys stepping off the ramp, sliding or slipping on the ramp," he explained.
Planson has always been hesitant with his employees moving safes, and Presha's death reminds him why.
"We're going to re-analyze our safe moving. We're going to make sure we know the size of the safe. We've got the right manpower on it and we're going to do our due diligence for sure," Planson added.
