PICKENS COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - The Pickens County Sheriff confirms there has been a shooting at an apartment community in Gordo.

The incident reportedly happened at the Grandview Gardens Apartments. Authorities are only letting residents back in to the apartments at this time.

Deputies had served an eviction notice to suspect William J. Corder Monday morning but Gordo Police received reports that loud music was coming from his apartment in the afternoon.

Police arrived at the apartment to investigate and that's when Corder and authorities reportedly exchanged fire. Witnesses say they heard more than twelve gunshots.

Corder was hit and airlifted to UAB. A Gordo police officer was injured but is expected to be released from the hospital soon.

Corder's family tells FOX6 News that the suffers from dementia. His niece fears something or someone might have provoked him.

"Because he doesn't do this unless someone bothers him," Treannia Cousette, Corder's niece, said. "Because he stays to himself. He doesn't come outside. He don't do nothing. So somebody had to have been bothering him."

Pickens County Sheriff David Abston said serving eviction notices sometimes sets people off and makes deputies jobs tougher.

"Its traumatic to those people. And probably once the deputy served him with the eviction then he probably became angry or emotionally unstable," Abston said.

The ABI will take over the investigation.
