BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum celebrated a big honor Friday.

The Guinness Book of World Records says the museum has the largest collection of motorcycles in the world. Museum officials hope the distinction will bring more gearheads to visit Birmingham.

"Since the first of the year we had people from 51 countries come to the museum. Hopefully one of those 50 will say let's open a shop or let's open open a business. Let's do something. The whole idea was to get people to Birmingham," museum founder George Barber said.

The five-story, 144,000-square foot museum is home to nearly 1,400 motorcyles. Only about half of them are currently on display.

With the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama underway this weekend, Birmingham Mayor William Bell is hoping to lure new business to the city.

"Because of this facility people from all over the world will be here and business will be discussed. Often times people don't know Birmingham until they come here. Barber Motorsports gives them the opportunity to come here," he said.

The head of the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau agrees.

"I think there are people who sit back and say, 'Birmingham? Why would I want to go to Birmimgham?' Once they get here they don't want to go home," Jim Smither said.

Barber says he has plans to expand the facility.
