Sylacauga man arrested for crash with officer

SYLACAUGA, AL (WBRC) - A Sylacauga man has been arrested in connection with a car crash involving a Sylacauga police officer.

Alabama State Troopers, in a statement Wednesday to FOX6 News, said Kelvin Earl Mackie, 39, was arrested on assault charges Wednesday morning in connection with the July 5 crash.

Troopers from the Department of Public Safety's Traffic Homicide Unit said they obtained a warrant for two counts of first-degree assault for Mackie's arrest after investigating the crash. The crash, which occurred on U.S. Highway 280 at Fort Williams Street, involved Mackie and Sylacauga Police Sgt. Wesley Thomas Allen, III.

Troopers said Mackie was traveling east in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 280 when his vehicle struck Sgt. Allen's patrol cruiser in its side. Sgt. Allen was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 280 and travel on Fort Williams Street when he was struck.

Sgt. Allen is in rehab and expected to go home soon.
