Maurice McCarty receives life sentence for Kayla Fanaei killing

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – A man convicted of killing a UAB student has been sentenced to life in prison.

Maurice McCarty received the sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole on Friday morning in Judge Teresa Pulliam's courtroom. McCarty was convicted in May in the 2007 murder of college student Kayla Fanaei after going through two mistrials.

McCarty was originally charged with capital murder, but was convicted of two lesser counts of felony murder.

Also charged in the murder were Alfred Marina and Gregory Hill. Hill plead guilty to a lesser charge in December of 2008. Marina's trial has yet to take place.

Kayla's mother, Robin Fanaei, says she is glad this part is over and she is happy with the sentence given.
