Pell City passes tax increase

Birmingham, AL (WBRC) - The Pell City city council has passed a one cent sales tax increase raising the new tax rate to ten cents. Mayor Bill Hereford has said the increase would bring in an extra $2 million dollars a year to the city, but some business owners say the increase could hurt by pushing customers to other cities.

The increase goes into effect in 60 days and for the first four years half of the tax money will go to schools, the other half to the city.
