BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Birmingham's superintendent search has ended. Dr. Craig Witherspoon has accepted the Board of Education's offer. He is expected to meet with board members on Thursday to finalize his contract.
Witherspoon is currently the superintendent of Edgecombe County Schools in North Carolina. It is a much smaller school district with only about 7,500 students.
Witherspoon has about 21 years of experience in education including being a teacher, an assistant principal and a principal.
The board's offer included a base salary of $185,000 and various incentives including a monthly car allowance, relocation expenses and temporary housing for 90 days. It also includes the basics like health benefits, vacation and sick time and annual salary increases. All in all the deal is worth about $242,000.
During his three and a half years in North Carolina, Witherspoon says he has managed to turn around the district's finances and build up a solid reserve fund.
