The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, December 15, 2009:
If a politician's "personal" finances are a wreck, it that any of our concern as taxpayers?
If they grossly overspend their own money, we think it stands to reason they might be even more irresponsible when it's not their money. When, in fact, it's ours!
We certainly don't want to limit the field of candidates to just the rich ones. That doesn't solve the problem. But, we would like to find a way so voters know more of what they're getting.
We don't need to be looking at their credit card statements…but it sure would be nice to know they reliably pay their bills.
Some applicants for jobs in private industry have to reveal personal financial information before they get hired. It gives the company an idea about whether the person can be trusted with company money.
It seems like we ought to know that before we hire a politician to handle taxpayer money.
