Man killed, 6 injured in shooting after ‘hundreds’ of unaccompanied youth gather
PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA/Gray News) - One person was killed in a shooting that injured six other people, Pensacola police said.
The shooting reportedly happened around 1:30 a.m. on July 5.
Police said a 19-year-old was killed in the shooting.
During a press conference, police also said that the shooting happened after a fireworks display. As the night went on, they said, a group of “hundreds” of unaccompanied younger people started to gather and become disruptive.
Fights then began to break out, according to police, escalating to people throwing mortar fireworks at each other.
The 19-year-old who was shot died at the scene, police said.
The other shooting victims were expected to be OK.
Residents and visitors were encouraged to stay away from downtown until the situation was “stabilized.”
No arrests were immediately made as the investigation continued, but police said they believe the shooting was targeted.
