University of Montevallo launches new nursing program
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - As the demand for healthcare professionals increases in Alabama, the University of Montevallo is getting ready to start a new nursing program to help fill those much-needed positions.
University leaders say this is a highly anticipated program with about 48 current students already showing interest.
They say the university started this process 3 years ago after seeing a critical need for nurses in the state.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program is the first of its kind at the university and will be housed in the newly renovated Myrick Hall.
The program, also known as the College of Health Professions, will offer a pre-licensure BSN track and an RN to BSN track.
Students will have an opportunity to work in simulation labs and complete their clinicals at hospitals, clinics and other community agencies.
Courtney Bentley, provost and Senior vice President for Academic Affairs says, “The majority of our students come to us within a 50 mile radius of our campus and they return to their communities at completion. So we have every confidence that they will develop deep relationships with our clinic partners and find an employment home where they can take on their career once they complete their time at UM.”
University faculty and staff are currently creating the curriculum and plan to open applications in June.
The program starts in the fall.
