BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Birmingham Police say they have made an arrest after 21-year-old Anthony Lambert Jr. was shot and killed in Ensley Thursday afternoon.

According to authorities, West Precinct officers were dispatched to a shot spotter alert at 4:20 p.m. in the 5700 block of Court I. While en route, officers were updated that a person was lying unresponsive in the front yard of a home on 58th Street in Ensley.

Upon arrival, officers saw Lambert in the front yard suffering from visible signs of trauma. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on scene and pronounced Lambert deceased.

According to authorities, preliminary investigations revealed that there was reason to believe Lambert was arguing with one or two men before the suspect(s) began firing shots at the victim before leaving the scene.

On the same day of the shooting, officers were notified that an adult male was en route to BPD HQ to turn himself in. At HQ, officers made contact with Gary Steele, 33, of Bessemer, and interviewed him.

On Friday, April 19, detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, and after an assessment of information, obtained a warrant for murder.

Steele is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail and has no bond.
