CALERA, Ala. (WBRC) - Shelby County school leaders are investigating after a disturbing photo recently surfaced. The photo shows students from Calera High School reenacting the horrific George Floyd incident.

WBRC was told the picture was taken last summer and was posted back in September; however, current students saw the photo on social media and brought it to the school’s attention this week.

Although WBRC does not have permission to show the picture, six students are shown with one student lying on the ground with another student’s knee on his neck and another student acting as if he was handcuffing him.

WBRC reached out to the Shelby County school system, and in the statement they said: “Calera High School administrators and district leaders are aware of the photo and are investigating. School officials were unaware of the photo until it was brought to their attention this week.”

A few concerned parents who want to remain anonymous said when they first saw the photo, they were infuriated and appalled.

“This is something that is taught, these children don’t come into the world thinking that the death of a man at the hands of public servants is a laughing matter or is funny. That’s not a laughing matter,” said one of the parents.

“It’s very disheartening to see, I’m not for people losing their jobs, but I think everyone should be held accountable for their actions. You have to teach young students as you grow older your actions will have consequences,” said another parent.

The investigation continues and WBRC was told one of the students is no longer at the high school.

The parents ask other parents to talk to their children and come together as a community and openly discuss racism and how this type of behavior is not condoned.
