What’s next for Brookwood Village?
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Leaders in Homewood and Mountain Brook say they’re hopeful something is coming to the Brookwood Village shopping center, but they haven’t heard much. But before any decisions are made, they will need to hear from residents.
The property was taken over by Fairway Investments and Pope and Land Real Estate in 2021, but not much has happened since then.
Homewood City Councilor Jennifer Andress, who represents this district and lives across the street from the space, says this is something she gets asked often.
“So I get this question all the time, weekly for sure. We officially don’t have any news at the city. Unofficially, I don’t have any news either,” says Andress. “We haven’t heard anything at all from the owners. So nothing has been brought forward to either Homewood or Mountain Brook.”
She says it will be a process before the owners make any moves.
“Anything that happens would have to require a rezoning and it would need to be in conjunction with both Homewood and Mountain Brook,” says Andress. “There will be multiple opportunities for public input because there would be public hearings that go along with the rezoning. So we will shout it loud and proud when we have anything to share with the public.”
She adds this is a prime piece of real estate for both cities and greater Birmingham, and with so many nearby amenities, they’d like to see the space thriving again.
“It really is a key piece of property between Homewood, Vestavia, Mountain Brook, and the city of Birmingham. It’s where we all kind of come together,” says Andress. “It’s really just the heart of Jefferson County right here when you’re talking about just over the mountain. It connects. We’ve got a beautiful Shades Creek greenway that goes through, and then it connects to the Jemison trail. It’s just a huge piece of the puzzle that makes this area beautiful.”
WBRC reached out to both Fairway and Pope and Land about an update on what’s next for the space, but so far, they have not responded.
