Children’s of Alabama approved for renovation, build out of new floor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A certificate of need has been approved by the Alabama State Health Planning & Development Agency for Children’s of Alabama that will allow for some renovations and the build out of a new floor.
According to hospital officials, the renovations will allow the hospital to more effectively care for patients in behavioral health, critical care and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The project will involve the building out of the 12th floor at the Benjamin Russell building, which is currently shelled space, to serve as a 50-bed unit for critical care patients.
To better serve behavioral patients, officials say the 5th floor of the McWane building will be renovated to add 11 additional beds for the unit.
We’re told six additional bassinets will also be added to the NICU.
“We are pleased with this approval, which will allow us to begin the next chapter of 110-plus years of caring for pediatric patients. The expansion will provide room to serve more patients who need critical care, behavioral health services and the NICU,” said Children’s of Alabama CEO and president Tom Shufflebarger.
Officials say the licensed bed capacity for the hospital will remain at 332.
The project will be completed by Poole & Company Architects in the fall of 2026. It’s estimated to cost nearly $55 million.
