Train strikes, kills La Vega High student attempting to cross tracks

BELLMEAD, Texas (KWTX) - Bellmead Police said a train struck and killed a 14-year-old La Vega High School student as she attempted to cross the tracks Wednesday morning.

Close relatives who spoke with News 10 identified the girl as Teddie Mason.

“For those of you who knew Teddie, you know she was the light in any room she stepped in. She had such a contagious smile with the bubbly personality to match. She had the ability to find the silver lining in any situation, and could assure you that everything would be okay with just her laugh and smile,” the family said.

The accident was reported shortly after 8 a.m. on October 13 in the 1000 block of Air Base Road. Police officers spoke with witnesses who said the girl was struck by the train after she fell down while attempting to cross the tracks. A Justice of the Peace pronounced her dead at the scene.

“We would like to extend our thoughts to the family and to the La Vega ISD friends and staff,” the Bellmead Police Department said.

The Mason Family set up a Go Fund Me account and the community is asked to help the family pay for funeral expenses.

Mason has joined the La Vega High School JROTC this year and was very enthusiastic about it, her family said.

“She was very helpful and compassionate to others. Teddie loved to sing and dance,” the family said, “Teddie Michelle was definitely our gold at the end of the rainbow.”
