Man arrested after vehicle pursuit briefly shuts down Hwy 280

COLUMBIANA, Ala. (WBRC) - A man who led Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies on a short vehicle pursuit on Hwy 280 before fleeing on foot is now in custody.

Police say 29-year-old Tadarius Hammond was arrested for multiple traffic violations and attempting to elude law enforcement.

According to Captain Mark Bishop with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop shortly before 1 a.m. As the deputy approached the car, a rifle was observed in Hammond’s possession. As the deputy attempted to address the situation, Hammond fled the scene.

A short pursuit happened on Hwy 280, headed eastbound. The chase ended when Hammond crashed at Bowling Drive and Hwy 280 and fled the scene on foot.

Hammond was taken into custody a short time later. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $7,500.

Hwy 280 reopened in both directions.
