BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A new CDC report says vaccines offer 91% protection from COVID-19.

91% efficacy is a little less than the 95% efficacy rate the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines where touted to have at the beginning of the rollout.

But Deputy State Health Officer Dr. Karen Landers said any efficacy in the 90% range is excellent.

She said the vaccines are still very effective.

The state of Alabama has had around 800 breakthrough cases out of more than 3 million vaccinations, according to Landers.

A breakthrough case is when someone who is fully vaccinated is diagnosed with COVID-19.

Even then, Landers said the illness usually doesn’t have the same effect.

“Persona had less severe disease. Less hospitalizations and more importantly less mortality and I think that’s what were seeking here,” Landers said.

Landers said she was pleased with the performance of the vaccines thus far.
