Crews nearing end of construction on Shelby County services building
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Crews are nearing completion on the new county services building in Shelby County to accommodate the growth in and around Chelsea.
“It’s one of the fastest growing corridors in Shelby County. Probably more housing starts there than any of our cities I would think,” said Elwyn Bearden, Shelby County Commission Chair.
Census Data for the city estimates it grew by 448 people, or over 3%, between 2019 and 2020. But, if we take it back to 2010, it’s grown by an estimated 36%.
The new facility will open near Chelsea next to the Sports First Fields off highway 280 between Dunnavent Valley Road and Essex Drive.
The sheriff’s department will be located here along with the E-911 office and Central Alabama Wellness. You can also get you driver’s license or permit at this location along with your car tag services. It’s roughly $15.
“That area needs one. We have one in Pelham. This is going to be 50 percent bigger,” said Bearden.
The county hopes to open the building the first week of September. It will be named after retired County Manager Alex Dudchock who served the county for for 29 years.
