BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Friday is the deadline for Governor Kay Ivey’s face mask order. Many expect the governor will extend it. Still doctors are already fighting a myth, that once you get your vaccine shot, you don’t need to wear a mask.
It is a myth. Yes people are lining up to get their vaccine shots, still, a top public health doctor said that does not mean you can get rid of your face mask after one or even two shots.
“We still a tremendous amount of community spread. Until we get a lot of people vaccinated and we see that spread going down we are going to need those masks to slow this virus down until we get more vaccine out,” Dr. Wesley Willeford said.
Dr. Willeford said studies do show the vaccines will be effective but they and other healthcare leaders are getting questions already from people asking can they stop wearing a mask after getting the vaccine shots?
“We do know the vaccine will prevent you from having severe disease and usually prevent you from getting sick. We don’t know if it will prevent you from picking up the virus and spreading it without you having symptoms,” Willeford said.
Willeford said it’s going to take until late spring or early summer to make a bigger dent in the COVID 19 numbers.
“We really need to see the numbers come down in a big way before we starting talking about getting back out there and doing things like we did before.” Willeford said.
Dr. Willeford said we should know more about the impact of the vaccines and about community spread as more tests are now being done.
