BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) -A former top federal official in our area says he’s disgusted by what he saw Wednesday at the Capitol in Washington, DC.
Jay Town, the former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, says he’s taken the oath to protect and defend the constitution many times in his government and military career and says there is nothing patriotic about rioters storming the Capitol.
Town believes this county must figure out how to have discourse and disagreements at the same time. He feels the rioters should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“It was shameful activity. I can tell you that nothing that I saw that happened at Capitol doors and inside the Capitol building yesterday and last night was even remotely patriotic,” Town said.
Prim Escalona, the new U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama says she will prosecute anyone from this area who committed criminal acts yesterday. She says what happened at the capital strikes at the heart of democracy.
Right now, investigators are combing through pictures and videos of what happened inside the capitol building. Those responsible could face a lengthy list of federal charges.
So far, more than 70 people have been arrested including a man from North Alabama. He is facing firearms charges.
Town says damaging federal property is a federal felony. There is plenty of video and pictures out there that will help the FBI and other law enforcement agencies go after those responsible.
“The professionals are going to do their jobs…and bring the people to justice that were violent yesterday. They did not act as patriots. They acted as criminals,” Town said.
Town says law enforcement will look into any possible planning that took place before people stormed the Capitol. Was it a random act or a coordinated effort? All of this will come into play as this investigation heats up.
