Domestic incident investigation in Shelby County

SHELBY CO., Ala. (WBRC) - UPDATE: The Shelby County deputy injured in the Mooney Road domestic incident has been treated and released from the hospital.

The Shelby County Coroner also confirmed the identity of the woman investigators said tried to run over a deputy. She was 48-year-old Amanda Falkner from Columbiana.

ORIGINAL: Authorities in Shelby County say a woman is dead and a Sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured early Monday evening in Columbiana.

Shortly before 6 p.m., deputies were called to investigate a domestic dispute on Mooney Road.

After arriving at the scene, they encountered a woman who investigators say attempted to strike deputies with her vehicle.

Officials say the woman made contact with one of deputies. After that happened, the other deputies at the scene fired on the suspect. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy was flown to UAB and treated for serious injuries.

The Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force is continuing their independent investigation into the incident. The investigation will be conducted by members of the multi-jurisdictional Task Force who are employed by other municipalities within Shelby County, and their investigation will be overseen by the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff John Samaniego stated, “Any situation that involves the loss of life is tragic regardless of the circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected including the family and friends who lost a loved one and all the deputies involved.”
