BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Birmingham and specifically Jefferson County, has the highest number of cases of COVID-19 in Alabama to date, which is why Accel testing chose the Magic City to test COVID-19 vaccines.

On the government’s clinical trials website for Novavax, Birmingham is listed as one of 120 study locations nationwide. They have gotten about  300 volunteers so far and they say they want to double that number as they get ready to start the trial.

“You have to be mixed with other people, we want people who could possibly get the COVID virus,” explained Dr. Hayes Williams with Accel Research Birmingham.

“We’ve been doing this now for about four months and we have yet to see any significant reactions from the injections,” he added.

It’s what’s called a masked trial.

“Some of them are given a placebo and some are given a real shot, we don’t know which one is getting which,” said Dr. Williams.

Then, they keep tabs on the patients every month for two years.

Participants who are accepted into the trials are compensated. More information is available at
