BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - UAB is one win away from playing in its third straight Conference USA Championship game, but this Saturday the Blazers will be without a dozen of its main players.
On Wednesday, UAB head coach Bill Clark says they have 25 players out due to COVID-19/contact tracing and 12 of those are either starters or guys who see a lot of playing time.
The positive results stem from the Blazers round of testing before the Middle Tennessee State game that was eventually canceled due to COVID-19 within the MTSU program.
Clark says the running back room and secondary have been impacted the most.
“Our numbers are down and there’s no doubt about this and that’s what I tell these guys, the greatest stories come from the greatest adversity, but it has been tough. I’m proud of our guys for the resiliency and they’re willingness to play in this game,” said Clark.
Saturday’s game against Rice will mark 42 days since the Blazers last played. The Blazers will also be without star wide receiver Austin Watkins, who has opted out of the rest of the season.
UAB vs. Rice kickoff Saturday at noon.
