ANNISTON, Ala. (WBRC) - Anniston’s city manager says it was especially difficult to pick a new Fire Chief among the city’s assistant chiefs.
On Monday, Stephen Folks announced he’d chosen Jeff Waldrep as the city’s new fire chief.
He replaces Chris Collins, who announced his retirement recently.
Waldrep is a 26-year veteran of the fire department, and says a lot of what he learned came recently in lessons related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Among other things, he learned about the quality of the firefighters under him.
“I learned how professional our guys are here, and learned how much they’ve really overcome all the obstacles in their way. I mean, they’re really a great bunch of guys here. They do an exceptional job,” Waldrep says.
Under the city’s laws, the candidates were chosen among the department’s assistant chiefs who then tested for the job.
The three top scoring candidates each became interim chief for two weeks each.
