TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - Students across the state will be back at it Monday as schools reopen after the Thanksgiving holiday, but in Tuscaloosa the city schools system still needs bus drivers.
Tuscaloosa City Schools has been able to make the limited bus driver staff they have available work by having them driving extra routes or increasing the number of students on a bus by about 10.
The Tuscaloosa City Schools transportation department had record absences, some related to quarantining employees. The bus driver shortage is also in combination with the fact that Tuscaloosa City Schools currently has 23 bus driver vacancies.
Prior to the Thanksgiving break, there were no reports of late arrivals and only one bus reported fewer riders due to parents driving their kids. School district leaders hope to have more bus driver staff return today or some time this week.
