BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - An investigation is underway after a Birmingham police officer responding to a robbery in progress, fired his weapon at an armed suspect Sunday afternoon.
According to B’ham police, officers responded to a burglary call at Emmanuel Temple Church located at 433 1st Street North around 2:42 p.m.
Once inside the church, an officer encountered an armed suspect. The officers fired his weapon but the suspect was not struck. Officers were then able to subdue the suspect and deescalate the incident using alternative measures. The suspect did not sustain any injuries.
No parishioners were at the church during the incident.
The officer was evaluated at the scene after receiving minor injuries.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation.
