GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) - A Fire has destroyed two apartments in an East Gadsden complex leaving one person with a minor injury.
Gadsden Fire Stephen Carroll says his department got the call at 8:11 a.m. When he arrived he found Building 5 fully involved and the top floor of Building 4 heavily involved.
Firefighters say one person suffered a minor injury on his leg, just above the knee.
Two other buildings were damaged by heat damage in the form of melted siding.
A first responder says the call came in from movers moving someone out of one of the buildings when they saw smoke coming out of the other side. They had only moved one piece of furniture before the fire overtook the building.
Multiple fire units from Gadsden, Glencoe, Hokes Bluff and other cities were on the scene Tuesday morning. The apartments are located right at the Gadsden-Glencoe city limits but are in Gadsden.
Fire hoses left West Air Depot Road partly blocked.
Melvin Renfroe has just moved into Building 5 Monday, “everything I own,” he says. He hadn’t spent even the first night in his new apartment.
Now he no longer has a place to live and is unsure if he has any possessions to his name.
“I don’t know anything right now, not the way it looks, not the way they were spraying water on it...Not the greatest, not the greatest,” Refroe told us, holding back tears, after we asked how he felt at that moment.
The American Red Cross has a representative on the scene consulting with the property manager about displaced residents.
