Birmingham police make arrest after fatal shooting of 71-year-old woman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Birmingham police have made an arrest after the fatal shooting of 71-year-old Javanna Cotton Owens.

Birmingham PD says they have arrested 37-year-old Kartavius Vines of Birmingham on capital murder charges in the death of Owens.

Vines is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.

Police say they responded to the 500 block of Brussels Circle Sunday around 9 p.m. and found the victim lying in the street. Owens was taken to UAB Hospital but later died.

Police say the preliminary investigation suggests Owens' was walking down the street and approached a vehicle as if she knew the people inside. Someone in the vehicle fired one shot, hitting her. The vehicle then drove away.

With the help of FLOCK LPR Cameras, the suspect’s vehicle was located.

The suspect’s identity or charges have not been released.
