TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - Police are investigating a late-night shootout in Tuscaloosa that injured a child.

Police say an 8-year-old boy was transported to Children’s Hospital after being shot. He is in serious condition.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Monday in the 4700 block of 1st Street East at Crescent East Apartments. Witnesses reported multiple people shooting over several blocks and authorities estimate between 20-40 shots were fired. Police say numerous shell casings were found over a large area.

Authorities say the 8-year-old boy was in his family’s vehicle which was traveling through the area when the shooting occurred. He was hit by a round that entered the vehicle.

No information about suspects has been released. This is an ongoing investigation.

Shelia Barnes heard the gunfire that brought police to her community in Tuscaloosa’s Crescent East Apartments Monday night.

Barnes said, “I could do nothing instantly but pray, pray for him, pray for his family, cause he’s an innocent child.”

Barnes and her neighbor Michael Moore also know the 8 year-old boy who was wounded.

Barnes said, “I was hurt, I was sad. Then to find out it’s a child we know and we saw everyday coming through here. I was really in shock.”

“It’s too many guns, too many. Just people shooting freely so it needs to change,” said Barnes.
